Precision cut gemstones

Precision cuts on gemstones can bring out the best in gem rough. Facets are cut at specific angles for each particular mineral. Different minerals have different refractive indexes, which results in different critical angles. Ideally, gemstones are cut above these critical angle to prevent light loss through the stone's pavilion, which is known as windowing.

This brings out the maximum brilliance and scintillation and ensures minimal light is lost through the stone. Each facet meets the next one perfectly and carries a superior polish.

Precision cut gemstones differ from commercially cut gems which are usually cut quickly and in a way intended to retain weight. Commercial cut gems are often dull and lacklustre or display scratches, chips and unsightly windows through the stone where light is lost and not reflected back.

Precision cuts take time to create and care is taken to ensure facets meet properly and that all surfaces are polished.
